Description

Description

The CMS introduced the Targeted Probe and Educate (TPE) audits on October 1, 2017 to determine if hospices are billing appropriately. The major goal of TPE is to reduce or prevent improper payments. But it also aims to provide data analysis and education to providers.

TPE has a significant impact on hospices and the CMS and Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) have revealed some areas within the hospice benefit at risk for improper Medicare payments.

To avoid these audits should be your primary concern. However, if you are hit with one, providers and suppliers are allowed to challenge TPE claim denials and overpayments through the regular Medicare appeals process.
